The independently owned property first caught my eye for its Oregrown 420 Package, but I quickly learned that this smoker-friendly special offer is just one of many reasons that the hotel is a perfect home base for cannabis travelers in Portland.
The hotel’s approach to cannabis reflects the city itself, where the plant is legal, established, and integrated into a robust cultural identity that spans fields from culinary to art curation, brewing to boating. “We’re a tiny boutique hotel in a progressive, liberal city that embraces cannabis, and we get to help people discover all of it,” Jess Brower, the Jupiter’s marketing and community manager, tells HighWays Travel.
Choose Your Jupiter
The Jupiter Hotel is actually a complex of two unique properties set across the street from each other.
Want to feel like you’re in the middle of the action? The colorful Jupiter Original, an 81-room renovated bi-level 1960s motor lodge, is energetic and playful. Wall-sized murals and music-themed decor set an irreverent vibe, and there’s even an on-site venue for live music.
Across the street, Jupiter NEXT is the property’s newer, more mature sibling. Open since 2018, the six-story building offers a more polished, modern experience. Sixty-seven elegantly appointed rooms and suites feature floor-to-ceiling windows, with views stretching from the Central Eastside toward the West Hills. After you check in, grab a CBD beverage from the minibar, pamper yourself with locally produced bath products, and feel like you’ve found your Portland home away from home. Then head to the super-fun Hey Love lobby bar, which opens at 3 p.m. daily, and grab a bite from a rotating selection of pop-up restaurants-in-residence.
Bonus: The Jupiter Hotel is one of the few hotels in the city that has bus parking, so you might even spot a band staying there while you’re in town.
Local to the Core
The Jupiter doesn’t offer fitness classes. There’s no sprawling wellness center and no guided tours to sign up for. Instead, the hotel partners with Portland businesses via its Local Hookups program; guests need only show their hotel keycard or mention specific promo codes at a bunch of nearby businesses ranging from yoga studios to restaurants. “We found the people doing it all way better than we ever could,” says Brower.

Get to Know the Neighborhood
The hotel is located in Buckman on the city’s Central Eastside, a trendy neighborhood packed with independent businesses like high-profile restaurants, cute coffee shops, stylized bars, vintage stores, and engaging entertainment. But that wasn’t always the case.
When the hotel opened more than two decades ago, this stretch of Portland was still heavily industrial, with a much rougher reputation. “This was a seedy part of town,” says Brower. Through the years, the hotel evolved alongside its surroundings, transforming from a mid-century motor lodge into a vibrant hotel and social hub. “We’re proud to be an anchor of the neighborhood.”
Today, you can step outside the hotel doors and find a slew of sites and activities at your fingertips. Do some shopping you can’t do anywhere else. Wander past murals on your way to the waterfront. Eat at one of several James Beard-recognized restaurants located within a few blocks.

Plant-Forward, Not Plant-Focused
If you travel with cannabis in mind, you know how dramatically the experience can change from one destination to another. Even in places where consumption is allowed, it’s hard to know where smoking is actually okay, whether legally or socially. That’s not so at The Jupiter.
The hotel’s layout is especially appealing for cannabis people. At Next, the fifth-floor lounge, Perch, has a designated outdoor smoking section with gorgeous views of the city, and each guest floor features outdoor smoking porches that are perfect for puffing and pondering.
While smoking is not technically permitted in the plant-laden courtyard at Original, guests often hang out there talking, laughing, and mingling with like-minded travelers. There’s even a DreamTENT complete with misters for hot days and heaters for when the weather gets cold.

What to Know about Cannabis in Oregon
- Recreational cannabis is legal for adults 21 and older. You don’t need to be an Oregon resident or have a medical cannabis card to shop at an OLCC-licensed recreational dispensary. Just bring a valid, government-issued ID.
- You can possess up to two ounces of cannabis flower in public. Oregon also sets separate possession limits for other products, including up to 16 ounces of solid cannabinoid products, 72 ounces of liquid cannabinoid products, and one ounce of cannabinoid extracts purchased from a licensed retailer.
- You can’t consume cannabis just anywhere. Public consumption remains illegal. Oregon considers streets, parks, public transportation areas, hotel lobbies and hallways, and other places accessible to the general public to be public places. Cannabis also can’t be consumed at bars, restaurants, or their patios.
- Don’t take your Oregon purchases home with you. Cannabis cannot legally cross state lines, even if you’re traveling to another state where recreational cannabis is legal.
- Don’t drive high. Driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal in Oregon. If you’re planning to consume, arrange another way to get around.
- Buy from licensed dispensaries. Oregon’s recreational cannabis market is regulated by the Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission (OLCC), and the Oregon Health Authority specifically advises consumers to purchase cannabis from OLCC-licensed retailers.
