Getting From and Back to the Airport

O’Hare sits about 30–45 minutes from downtown Chicago by car, depending on traffic. However, unless you have at least eight hours between flights, we suggest you stay a little bit closer to the terminal.

Your best options:

  • Uber/Lyft/Taxis: Fastest and easiest
  • CTA Blue Line: Direct train from the airport to downtown (~45 minutes)
  • Stay nearby: Best for shorter layovers

Layover Game Plans at a Glance

You’ll find detailed layover suggestions later on in this guide, but here’s an overview to help you get a sense of what you’ll have time for.

Short Layover (under 4 hours): Don’t leave the airport.

For layovers shorter than four hours, we recommend staying at the airport. ORD is an incredibly busy hub servicing a bustling city — if you leave, you’re risking unexpected traffic, transit backups, and long TSA lines that could put you in danger of missing your next flight.

Mid-length layover (4–8 hours): Explore a nearby neighborhood.

  • Head to a town close to the airport, like Rosemont, Franklin Park, and Park Ridge.
  • Visit a dispensary, grab a bite, and enjoy local entertainment.
  • Head back to ORD with plenty of time.

Longer layover (8 or more hours): Make your way downtown.

  • Grab a ride or take public transportation into Chicago. The CTA’s Blue Line train starts at O’Hare.
  • Pop into a dispensary, shop, walk, and/or grab a bite — you’ll find lots of options all over.
  • Traffic can be brutal and public transportation can experience delays, so give yourself ample time to get back to the airport without rushing.

What to Know About Cannabis in Illinois

Before you light up (or take a puff or bite), keep local regulations in mind.

  • Bring a valid ID. You must be 21+ with government-issued identification.
  • Know possession limits. The rules are different for residents of Illinois and non-residents.
  • Consumption is not allowed in public spaces.
  • You cannot consume at the airport.
  • Order ahead if you’re in a rush. Many dispensaries allow online pre-orders for faster pickup.
  • Private spaces are key (hotels, private residences, certain lounges).
  • Plan transportation. Dispensaries are not within walking distance of the terminal, so have a plan for how to get from and back to the airport.
  • Edibles take time — plan accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cannabis Near ORD Airport

Can I bring cannabis through O’Hare Airport?

The TSA allows passengers to bring medical cannabis on domestic flights, but recreational cannabis is technically not permitted. Agents do not specifically look for cannabis products, but if they find them, it’s up to local authorities to decide how to proceed.

How far are dispensaries from O’Hare Airport?

The dispensaries listed above are all roughly 10 minutes away by car, depending on traffic.

Can I buy cannabis immediately after landing in Chicago?

Yes. Once you leave airport property, you can legally purchase cannabis at licensed dispensaries if you are 21+ with a valid ID.

How much cannabis can I have on me?

Illinois residents who are 21+ may possess up to 30 grams of cannabis flower, 5 grams of cannabis concentrate, and cannabis-infused products with up to 500 milligrams of THC. For non-residents of Illinois, those amounts are halved to 15 grams of flower, 2.5 grams of concentrate, and 250 milligrams of THC edibles.

How can I pay for my dispensary purchase?

Since cannabis is still illegal federally, dispensaries in the United States don’t accept traditional credit cards. In illinois, most dispensaries accept cash and debit cards, though cards usually come with a service fee that adds several dollars to your tab.

Is cannabis delivery available near the airport?

No, Illinois dispensaries are not legally allowed to deliver cannabis — customers must buy products on-site in the store. However, you can place an order ahead of your arrival to speed things up if you’re short on time.
