As one of the busiest airports in the Caribbean, Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) serves as a gateway between the continental United States, Puerto Rico, Latin America, and dozens of Caribbean islands. Whether you’re headed to St. Thomas, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, or another tropical destination, there’s a good chance you’ll find yourself changing planes in San Juan.
Unlike airports set far outside their cities, SJU is central to some of San Juan’s most vibrant neighborhoods. Within 10 to 20 minutes of leaving the terminal, you can be relaxing on the beach, exploring colorful streets lined with local restaurants and cafés, or discovering hidden gems that most connecting passengers never get to see.
Below, we’ve put together three easy, cannabis-friendly itineraries to help you make the most of your time between flights at some of our absolute favorite spots near the airport.
Layover Game Plans at a Glance
Short Layover (under 4 hours)
For layovers shorter than four hours, we recommend staying at the airport. If you leave, you’re risking unexpected traffic and long TSA lines that could put you in danger of missing your next flight.
Mid-length layover (4–6 hours)

- Visit a dispensary, grab a bite, and do some sightseeing.
- Head back with plenty of time to go through security.
Longer layover (7 or more hours)
- Combine two or three itineraries to explore different San Juan neighborhoods. The areas below are all within a short walk or quick car ride of each other.

Puerto Rico’s Cannabis Laws
While Puerto Rico has not (yet) legalized recreational cannabis, the U.S. territory does allow qualified patients (including visitors) to legally purchase medical cannabis at regulated dispensaries.
Obtaining a medical prescription is straightforward and can even be done in advance of your trip. Travelers age 21+ with a qualifying medical condition, which can range from chronic pain to bipolar disorder, can obtain temporary authorization through a Puerto Rico-licensed physician. With that, they can purchase cannabis products from hundreds of dispensaries across the island.

Know Before You Go
- TSA guidelines allow medical patients to travel domestically with prescribed cannabis.
- Bringing cannabis into or out of the United States (Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories included) is strictly illegal and can result in serious penalties, including fines and jail time.
- Public consumption is prohibited.
- Smoking cannabis is not permitted; it can be eaten, vaporized, cooked with, and otherwise ingested.
- Keep products in their original dispensary packaging while traveling.

Getting From and Back to SJU
One of the biggest advantages of planning a layover in San Juan is just how close Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) is to the city’s most popular neighborhoods. In only 10 to 20 minutes, you can be relaxing at the beach, dining at great restaurants, hanging with locals, and visiting licensed cannabis dispensaries to make all of those experiences even better.
Rideshare
Uber is the easiest way to get around during a layover and is widely available throughout the San Juan metro area, including at SJU. Designated rideshare pickup areas are clearly marked outside the terminals, and fares to nearby neighborhoods are generally affordable. Expect approximate travel times of:
- Isla Verde: 5–10 minutes
- Piñones: 10–15 minutes
- Ocean Park: 10–15 minutes
- Calle Loíza: 10–15 minutes
- Condado: 15–20 minutes
- Miramar: 15–20 minutes
While ride times are usually short, traffic can increase during weekday rush hours and on weekends, so make sure to build a little extra driving time into your return trip.
Publicos
Official airport taxis, called publicos, are available 24 hours a day at designated taxi stands outside of baggage claim. Fares are set by zone, making taxis a convenient option if you prefer not to use a rideshare app or don’t have mobile service when you land. If you plan to take a publico, make sure you have cash—most don’t accept credit cards.
Returning to the Airport
For domestic flights, plan to arrive back at SJU at least two hours before departure. If you’re flying to another Caribbean island or an international destination, three hours is a safer bet.

🥗 Serafina (1077 Ashford Avenue, San Juan): The menu at Serafina, a high-style restaurant in front of the famed La Concha hotel, features some of the same favorites you know from other Serafina outposts, along with flavors and atmosphere that are distinctly Caribbean. It’s a great place to sit back, slow down, and do some stellar people-watching.
🎰 La Concha (1077 Ashford Avenue, San Juan): If you’re ready to try your luck at the casino, just step inside La Concha and enter Casino del Mar. There, you can pick your pleasure: high-tech slot machines, table games, sports betting, and lots more. Our advice? Set an alarm before you go into the casino—once you sit down, it’s easy to lose track of time.
Intinerary 2: Bites and Boutiques on Calle Loíza
The blocks of of Calle Loíza (Loiza Street) that run between Condado and Ocean Park comprise one of the most interesting stretches in San Juan. Walls and buildings are covered in colorful murals, food and shopping are hard to beat, and new businesses continue to keep the neighborhood feeling fresh and exciting.

Itinerary 3: Beach Vibes in Ocean Park
Ocean Park attracts beachgoers, surfers, families, and anyone looking for a laid-back place to hang out. As the name suggests, this neighborhood is right on the water, so if you are craving the feel of the ocean, this is a perfect layover. Some of the exclusively residential areas in this enclave require key access, but everywhere we recommend below is publicly accessible to locals and tourists.
