As a professional traveler, I’ve visited some of the most beautiful islands in the world, but Koh Samui, Thailand, is one of the few etched into my heart. During a trip two decades ago, my cousin Eric and I dragged our lounge chairs into the bathtub-clear bay each morning, sat in the sun listening to Jeff Buckley all day, and fell asleep in our beachside bungalow to the sounds of gentle waves at night. Unfortunately, cannabis was still strictly off limits in Thailand, so while the rest of the resort got tipsy on brightly colored cocktails, my at-home go-to wellness rituals were on hold.

Well, times have changed, friends! Thailand now operates a regulated medical cannabis program that enables both locals and tourists to reap the healing benefits of the plant. And at The Beach Samui, a luxury beachfront resort, patients can meet with a licensed practitioner, obtain cannabis, and partake, all without leaving the hotel.

Cannabis Laws in Thailand
If you’re confused about cannabis laws in Thailand, it’s probably because the country has revamped its policies several times recently. In 2018, Thailand became the first Asian country to establish a medical marijuana program. Then, in 2022, it opened the doors to recreational adult use. The dispensary scene boomed until 2025, when cannabis was reclassified as a controlled herb solely for use under Thai Traditional Medicine rules.
Today, every dispensary has on-site medical supervision. Licensed practitioners evaluate potential patients, issue PT33 cannabis licenses, and offer thoughtful guidance for personalized cannabis regimens. Prescriptions are available to both locals and tourists who qualify as suffering from one or more of the following six ailments: insomnia, chronic pain, migraine, depression, loss of appetite, and Parkinson’s disease.
Be aware: Even if you have a prescription, public consumption is prohibited, with possible fines and jail time. Per the U.S. Department of State, “Effective June 17, 2026, individuals importing, exporting, or attempting to evade restrictions on cannabis may face penalties of up to 10 years in prison, a fine of up to 500,000 baht, or both.”
Cannabis at The Beach Samui
The Beach Samui has always celebrated and focused on the plant’s healing and wellness benefits. Thus, when the laws changed in 2025, the resort seamlessly pivoted to comply with the newly enacted regulations.
The property employs two licensed herbal pharmacists, who are on hand to evaluate guests, dispense prescriptions, and curate recommendations, as appropriate. Resort guests interested in meeting with these experts can do so discreetly and free of charge without ever leaving the property—the dispensary is set adjacent to the lobby inside the hotel. (Non-resort guests can meet with their practitioners for 100THB.)
However, that’s just the beginning of the cannabis-enhanced offerings at The Beach Samui. The resort empowers guests to infuse the goodness of cannabis into nearly every aspect of their stay, if they so choose.
Luxe Resort Amenities, Infused and Otherwise
Cannabis-enhanced wellness experiences abound at this idyllic property. For some travelers, it’s a meditative massage on the beach incorporating THC tincture, while for others, it’s sound baths and mindful consumption sessions. Still others sign up for interactive experiences like infusion cooking classes with the hotel’s pastry chef.

Not every stay here involves cannabis, however. The resort is just as magnificent whether you partake or not. Fresh papaya and mango slices make for a lovely tropical-vacation breakfast whether or not you drizzle them with infused honey. Sure, CBD oil feels amazing on sore muscles, but a massage without hemp is heavenly, too. Vacationers can engage in relaxing rituals like heading out for a calming kayak ride, opting for a lounge chair and a great book by the pool, borrowing bikes to explore the local area during the day, and stargazing at night.
Whether or not you use cannabis, The Beach Samui beautifully intertwines culture and wellness, encouraging guests to slow down, reconnect with themselves, and be present. “Instead of FOMO, or fear of missing out, we like to embrace JOMO: the joy of missing out,” Bryan Lunt, the resort’s founder and CEO, told HighWays Travel.

In fact, you don’t even have to venture out of your suite to pick up your products if you don’t want to. Holistic practitioners deliver in-room services ranging from rolling joints to drawing baths infused with healing poultices. The resort also partners with Kanha for a sleep program of naturally derived cannabis edibles.
While smoking isn’t permitted inside the hotel, each of the 21 suites features a private outdoor space overlooking the water, the perfect spot for stealing some time for a bowl or a blunt. Personally, after reading this TripAdvisor review, I’m manifesting myself smoking a blunt in the bathtub on my beachfront balcony.

Word on the Web
The property has an impressive 4.9/5 rating on TripAdvisor, with guests praising everything from the incredibly comfortable beds and breathtaking views to the secluded location away from the tourist-swarmed areas of the island. “Among the [resort] features are individualized wellness sessions amid a quirky, friendly, laid-back vibe,” writes one former guest.
